Hair and Bangs. Basic Stuff

Drawing the hair is one of my favorite things, it can say so much about a character personality.

I am one of those who beleive that generally anime has a simplified version of hair since it has to be draw over and over again in each frame and through motion it looks ok to the viewer, but manga dosent have motion frames ^-^ so it usually has more details. That is why i recomend that while you are learning to base your study in a manga ^-^.

There are many ways to draw hair; i use a more CLAMP style, this means long chunks XD and many details.

First we need a blank head ...

The hair has volumen so you will have to think of it as a shape that covers the head, like an onion layer ^-^. so the ! is for you to see that volumen (see how it dosent follow the dotted line, dont you?), even at a 3/4 view.

Remember that there is a forehead, bangs will fall from there. Hair also has line it can be in the middle or on one side.

Then you will draw chunks of hair. This chunks will have a direction, if it is windy or the character is moving the hair will also be in motion.

You dont need to draw every single hair in a the chunk, two or three lines will be enought. (see examples below)

There are a few things after you finished, i like to erase whatever the hair is covering (shoulder, neck or even cheeks) but never eyes or eyebrows.

A good way to draw chunks is this one. Think of them as volume, each one overlaps to the next one.

p.d. yeah, i fucked the outline, this image has to be redone

This way is (in my opinion) bad. It is too plain. If it reminds you of Pokemon you are right, Pokemon hair style is plain and pretty much boring. But naruto and bleach hair is a bit different which really spices things up
